Agon Sports joins Intersport

A new London sports retailer said a national organisation’s business proposition was so strong it joined its ranks before it had even served its first paying customer.

Agon Sports joined Intersport before it opened its doors for business in Herne Hill, London earlier this month. Explaining his decision, Peter Swann, Agon’s owner, said: “We felt we wanted the strength of a buying group around us from the beginning, and we chose Intersport.

“These are still challenging times and we are opening in the teeth of a severe downturn when consumers are being constantly buffeted by chill economic headwinds. It’s even more important, therefore, to pick a strong partner – and one who can offer the support systems that will help us start on the right foot and give us the sound foundation to flourish in the future.

“From the first call I made to Intersport to the open day, they have been a strong partner and I have no doubt I made the right decision joining the group. Intersport’s expertise and market presence has made the difference for Agon Sports so far.”

Barry Mellis, Intersport’s general manager, says: “We are delighted to welcome Peter Swann to our close-knit community of retailers and leading brands as we also recognise his single-minded determination and his compelling ambition to start his retail enterprise now.

“Agon Sports brings a refreshing spirit and great sense of enterprise to the ranks of retailing and our partnership reflects our own position in the market as a distinctive brand growing in influence and authority.”
