With the launch of the Green Silence Ghost 15 (GSG15), Brooks Running, expert in running shoe technology, is making its next step towards Net Zero.
GSG15 features the most dope dyed textiles and most recycled material by weight than any other shoe in Brooks’ product line. GSG15 is testament of Brooks’ mission to move its entire product line closer to its ambition of incorporating at least 50% recycled or bio-based content in all materials used in its products by 2030. Collectively, these efforts have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 5%, compared to the inline Ghost 15, which is equivalent to 6.5 plastic bottles.
The launch of GSG15 is an important milestone in over ten years of innovation, as Brooks works towards its goal of Net Zero carbon emissions by 2040, as part of its Climate Pledge. “This season, all of Brooks’ footwear styles will feature dope dyed materials used in the sockliner top cloth. Dope dyeing has a substantial lower environmental impact than traditional dyeing processes. It cuts down water use by 94%, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 92% and, on top of that, it uses 99% less energy,” explains David Kemp, Corporate Responsibility Director at Brooks Running. “Dope dyeing, and the resource conservation it offers, will open the door to exploration of other low impact dyeing options for our future footwear styles.”
The Green Silence Ghost 15 is the result of many years of innovation and research. 39.4% of the total shoe weight is made of recycled materials and 80% of total upper materials (by weight) are also made of recycled materials. Both are the highest percentage of re-used materials than any other Brooks footwear. Also, the GSG15 contains 10% recycled content in the midsole and 25% in the tongue and collar foam. It is the first time recycled materials are used in the midsole, tongue, and collar foam.
A softer and more sustainable landing
The GSG15 has the same features as its predecessor, Ghost 15, that was launched in Fall 2022, but is even more sustainable. The high-end shoe has been updated with soft DNA LOFT v2 cushioning and is lighter than ever. It delivers a soft landing and enables runners to make smooth transitions. An improved foot offers distraction-free comfort mile after mile. And as a finishing touch, the 3D Fit Print hugs the foot and enhances a secure fit, while ensuring breathability at the same time. The soft touchpoints ensure comfort and padding adds to this by eliminating friction and painful touch points.
Kemp said: “While the GSG15 includes the most recycled materials by weight out of any shoe in our line, this launch only marks the beginning. Starting in Spring 2024, we intend to feature a new outsole made out of 20% recycled silica content in our core cushion styles. The use of 10% recycled materials in the GSG15 brings key learnings about how our footwear teams can include recycled content in more of our midsole compounds in future footwear styles.”
GSG15 will be available online at brooksrunning.com and at retailers from September 1st 2023 for RRP £135.
