Greaves Sports, the Glasgow-based independent sports retailer, has announced that a fifth generation of the Greaves family has been appointed to the board of directors.
Hugh Leslie (25) and Miller Greaves (23), both marketing graduates from Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde University respectively, have worked in the family business since the age of 16 and have delighted managing director Sandy Greaves by choosing to develop their careers in the sports trade.
Sandy Greaves said: “Both Hugh and Miller have worked extremely hard to earn their place on the board and we welcome their appointment. Naturally we are delighted that, as a family business, they have chosen to commit themselves and continue a long line of family members – now stretching back five generations – who have helped make this business a great success story over the years.
“My great-grandfather would have been delighted to know that a business he started back in the 1930s was still going strong, and still in the family.”
Miller, who is Sandy Greaves’ eldest son, recently returned from a year in Australia working for leading compression apparel brand Skins, while Hugh, who is fellow director Anne Leslie’s eldest son, spent a year in Canada working for specialist sports retailer Summit Sport.
Greaves Sports is one of Scotland’s leading independent sports retailers with stores in Glasgow’s Gordon Street, Sauchiehall Street, the Nike outlet in Buchanan Galleries and the Scottish Rugby outlet in Murrayfield Stadium.
The business began as the Clydesdale Rubber Company in the 1930s, selling – among other things – Wellington boots and sheepskin coats. The shop diversified into sport in the 1950s, expanded its presence in Glasgow in the 1960s and became known as Greaves Sports in 1967.
