Newcastle Legend launches new lease of life

Newcastle United and England legend Peter Beardsley made a guest appearance at the official opening of an exciting new facility in North Tyneside recently.

The former England striker was on hand to unveil TigerTurf’s Life (Learning in Fun Environments) facility at St Peter’s C of E Primary School in Wallsend.

The interactive sports surface is designed specifically for primary schools and will be used as St Peter’s new seven-a-side football pitch, as well as for a number of other activities. Pupils worked with the school council to help plan the layout of the turf and choose the colours.

Paul Rickeard, headteacher at St Peter’s C of E Primary School, says: “It’s an honour to have Peter Beardsley come to our school and open our fantastic new sports facility.

“Because we are fenced in by a number of different buildings, in the past it has been difficult for us to create a suitable outdoor sports area for our pupils. Parents have all been desperate for a place where their children can play – but now they have it.

“Thanks to the synthetic turf, we have been able to construct an area that incorporates a running track and a tennis court, which does the job perfectly. Our new first-rate facility is certainly going to help our pupils stay fit and healthy, whilst also having fun.”

Bryn Lee, managing director of TigerTurf UK Ltd, says: “We are very proud of our innovative LIFE concept surface. The success of this project begins with the conception and planning stage, in which we seek the thoughts and ideas of the school children.

“They are involved from the outset in the design, colour and even which games they would like to be able to play on the surface. It empowers the children and we are able to create a safe, welcoming and protective environment that they are proud of and, most importantly, want to play on again and again.”
