Not many cars manage to rack up 150,000 miles on their odometers, so when Ron Hill, the former European and Commonwealth marathon champion, achieved this feat it became another major accomplishment to add to a long list.
Born on September 25, 1938 in Accrington, Lancashire, Ron gained his BSc (Tech) and his PhD in Textile Chemistry at Manchester University. He was made an MBE in 1971 for ‘services to athletics’.
Ron completed his 150,000th mile on the pitch prior to the Accrington Stanley FC match on Saturday, December 22 to the applause of his hometown supporters. Now a technical consultant for Hilly Clothing Ltd – the company he founded – Ron hasn’t missed a day’s running since December 20, 1964.
