Ronnie to make retail comeback

Chris Ronnie (pictured), the former chief executive of JJB Sports, is planning on making a retail return, according to The Telegraph and Manchester Evening News newspapers.

Ronnie has teamed up with Andrew Duckworth, a partner with turnaround specialist Winterhill Asset, to set up Premier Sports Retail Ltd, with the aim of buying up retail assets at low prices.

“We are looking for opportunities in retail over the course of the next 12 to 18 months,” Ronnie told the MEN.

“We’re interested in footwear, apparel and lifestyle businesses.

“We’ve looked at a few opportunities over the last couple of months and I am sure there will be a lot more during what I envisage will be a very tough period for retailers, with the VAT increase and challenging consumer environment.”

Duckworth and Ronnie were in negotiations to buy DW Sports Retail shops from Dave Whelan last autumn.
