Wings For Life World Run 2021
The eighth edition of the global charity run, Wings for Life World Run, has been confirmed for Sunday 9th May 2021 with registration for the UK event open today at www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com.
Wings for Life, a global spinal cord research foundation, has announced the return of the unique event where runners and wheelchair users across the world go as far as they can; in the aim to raise money and awareness for a cure for spinal cord injuries. 30 minutes after the starting gun is fired, the moving finishing line that is the ‘Catcher Car’ slowly speeds up and catches one participant after another until the winner is left. In 2020 the global winner ran a total of 69.92 kilometers or 4 hours and 12 minutes before getting caught.
The 2021 event in the UK will be a Wings for Life World Run App Run with a virtual Catcher Car, allowing people all over the country to take part in a safe and convenient way. The Wings for Life World Run App Run allows each participant to run anywhere and be accompanied by an exciting audio experience as the virtual Catcher Car slowly speeds up to them and finishes their race. The app can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play Store ahead of the event.
Since 2014, over 700,000 participants from 195 nations have taken part in Wings for Life World Run; completing 7 million kilometres and raising almost €30,000,000 for Wings for Life through entry fees and donations. 100% of all entry fees for the Wings for Life World Run are used for spinal cord research.
Former Olympic medalist and Wings for Life World Run Sports Director Colin Jackson said “I’m delighted the Wings for Life World Run will return in 2021. We have been developing the Wings for Life World Run App for the past five years so a virtual run isn’t new territory at all and will allow each participant to have a premium experience.”
“It doesn’t matter if a participant plans to go 1 kilometre, 5 kilometers, a half marathon, marathon or even further; the special format allows everybody to run their own race and achieve something amazing.”
CEO of Wings for Life Foundation, Anita Gerhardter said, “The support we receive is just phenomenal. The Wings for Life World Run is an important event for our foundation. In these times of isolation, we’re delighted to unite people all around the world again in 2021 to run together for a good cause.”
