Phil Taylor has clocked up an amazing half-century of ‘Major’ darts titles.
His third UK Open crown takes the Unicorn ace to the magical 50 Majors, as he continues to rewrite the darts history books. And although he was delighted to win in Bolton again, you could still see a little disappointment etched on Taylor’s face at losing the Premier League at Wembley. He was desperate to hold all nine ‘Major’ TV titles, but his defeat to Mervyn King at Wembley means he’ll have to settle for eight!
“Obviously, I am still disappointed about that loss in the Premier League because it would have been a real achievement to hold all the current ‘Major’ titles, but it gives me the motivation to keep on winning and I am still targeting the clean sweep,” Taylor said.
Taylor currently holds the World Championship, Players Championship Finals, UK Open, Las Vegas Desert Classic, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, European Championship and Grand Slam of Darts titles. The roll of honour for the 50 Majors reads:
PDC World Championship – 12 times
BDO World Championship – x2
World Matchplay – x9
World Grand Prix – x8
Las Vegas Desert Classic – x4
Premier League – x4
UK Open – x3
Grand Slam of Darts – x2
World Masters, News of the World, Masters of Darts, World Darts Trophy, European Championship and Players Championship Finals – x1
And there’s no doubt that there will be a lot more to come over the next five years, because Taylor has no intention of easing up. He explains: “I still have the hunger and desire to win. Vegas and Blackpool are coming up and I want to successfully defend both titles. It will be very hard, but I am feeling in good nick.”
