Welsh rugby stars go large

Ahead of the inaugural Under Armour Series, several Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) athletes have been documenting their training in real-time in a life-size app dashboard outside Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

The activity, orchestrated by Series sponsors Under Armour, falls on the eve of the autumn internationals and showcases to the public how professional athletes are able to track and record every aspect of their lifestyle – Sleep, Fitness, Activity and Nutrition – through the UA RECORD app.

The dashboard installation, mimicking the home screen of Under Armour’s holistic fitness tracking app UA RECORD, will showcase in front of a live audience how easy it is to get fitter via four simple quadrants – Sleep, Fitness, Activity and Nutrition. Built ahead of the Under Armour Series, the installation encourages Wales to become a healthier nation through those four simple aspects, all measurable via the app.

This was brought to life by international player’s and Under Armour athletes including Dan Lydiate, Rhys Webb and Leigh Halfpenny. Each tackled a quadrant of the Under Armour installation – a Sleep chamber, a Fitness centre, an Activity sector and a Nutrition facility – in short stints, reflecting a typical day in the life of the Welsh Rugby Union player.

The demonstration, created by global sports performance and innovation brand Under Armour, seeks to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and show how the training regimes and activities of professional athletes can relate to everybody’s everyday life, to help create a balanced lifestyle allowing everyone to perform at their best.

As part of WRU’s long term partnership with Under Armour their Official Technical Partner through 2025, WRU will also now have access to Under Armour’s UA RECORD™ app, which gives athletes a holistic view of their lifestyle and fitness to improve their performance.

The Under Armour Series, in the first year of a nine-year agreement, will feature four international matches this autumn. Opening on November 5 when Wales play Australia, the Series will also feature matches against Argentina (November 12), Japan (November 19) and South Africa (November 26).

Paul Nugent, Senior Director, Marketing, Under Armour Europe, said: “We’re continually striving to make all athletes better, and are looking to show just how simple it is to replicate a healthy lifestyle with our UA RECORD installation.

Training intelligently – both physically and mentally – by adopting a holistic approach is vital to achieving health and fitness goals, like our Welsh Rugby Union athletes are demonstrating here. We’re proud to get behind the team and Wales as a nation, and we encourage fans to download UA RECORD, as we strive towards a healthier future.”

Under Armour will continue to supply match day kits and performance training apparel to the WRU first team, age grade squads, Sevens and Women’s teams, all of which will feature Under Armour signature technologies, enabling peak performance in all weather conditions. These technologies include sweat-wicking HeatGear fabric to help keep players cool and dry, and ArmourGrid technology for light, durable strength.

Under Armour’s presence in rugby continues to expand, with the global sport brand also providing performance training apparel and footwear to Under Armour and Welsh Rugby Union athletes including Leigh Halfpenny, Jamie Roberts, Dan Lydiate and Rhys Webb.
