Ultra runner and Superfeet insole ambassador Sam Skinner recently sat down to discuss his journey into ultra running, his approach to training, and the importance of proper foot support in endurance races.
Skinner, who transitioned from a background in football and boxing to long-distance running, has quickly made a name for himself in the ultra-running community. In December 2023, he secured second place in the Centurion Winter Downs 200 and followed it up with an impressive eighth-place finish at the Montane Winter Spine Race, one of the toughest endurance events in the world.
Discussing his motivation for ultra running, Skinner shared: “Ultra running isn’t just about distance; it’s about pushing personal limits and seeing how far we can go. Every race is an opportunity to learn and grow.”
His training regimen involves extensive mileage, mental preparation, and course reconnaissance. In preparation for the Spine Race, Skinner dedicated himself to running sections of the course beforehand to simulate race conditions, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning and adaptability.
Nutrition and mental resilience play key roles in Skinner’s success. He partners with Precision Hydration for fuelling strategies, ensuring he maintains optimal performance throughout multi-day races. “After a couple of days on the trails, your palate changes, and getting food down can be tough, so finding the right balance of gels, chews, and savoury foods is crucial,” he explained.
A strong advocate for proper footwear support, Skinner credits Superfeet insoles for helping him avoid foot pain and injuries during gruelling races. “I stumbled across Superfeet early in my journey and haven’t looked back. Their blue medium-arch insoles have been a game-changer in my endurance performance.”
Looking ahead, Skinner has his sights set on more extreme endurance challenges, including the Tour des Géants and a potential return to the Spine Race. “Big efforts in remote environments are what fuel my passion. Running is my escapism, and I love the challenge of pushing my limits.”
