adidas releases statement following FIFA arrests and World Cup investigation

One of six main FIFA sponsors, the brand said in a statement:

“The adidas group is fully committed to creating a culture that promotes the highest standards of ethics and compliance, and we expect the same from our partners.

“We can therefore only encourage FIFA to continue to establish and follow transparent compliance standards in everything they do.”

The statement was released after allegations of bribery, money laundering and racketeering were made against several FIFA officials by US prosecutors.

A separate investigation by Swiss officials is also underway into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids, which are due to take place in Russia and Qatar respectively.

The relationship between adidas and FIFA dates back over 40 years.

adidas has been supplying the official match ball for all FIFA World Cup matches since 1970.

The current sponsorship deal between the two organisations runs until 2030.

adidas sold £1.6 billion worth of football product during the first 12 days of the 2014 World Cup, which works out at just over £133 million a day.
