The Danish sportswear brand hummel and Sunderland AFC present the new 2025-26 away kit, marking the club’s return to the Premier League with a design that pays tribute to the city’s proud maritime legacy.
The away shirt is the first of the season’s matchday collections and draws inspiration from the iconic Sunderland away strip worn between 1989 and 1991. The updated design reinterprets this fan-favourite era with a modern aesthetic and premium detailing.
Designed to reflect the identity of Sunderland as a coastal city, the shirt features a bespoke pattern woven into the fabric – inspired by the Roker Beach lighthouse – symbolizing the city’s enduring connection to the North Sea. The phrase “City by the Sea” is embroidered on the reverse neck, complemented by a poetic tribute on the inner collar that celebrates the spirit of Wearside.
As part of hummel’s ongoing commitment to responsible manufacturing, the shirt is produced using ECO8 technology – each shirt is made from eight recycled plastic bottles, combining sustainable innovation with elite performance.
The 2025-26 away collection also includes a coordinated range of matchday apparel, including an anthem jacket, warm-up tee, and quarter-zip top. In addition, a new lifestyle range introduces versatile pieces such as beachwear, headwear, and a tailored polo shirt, merging football culture with everyday wear.
The kit will go on sale from 8am BST on Friday, July 4, both online and at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light retail store, which will host launch activities and extended opening hours over the weekend.
Further kit launches – including home and third strips – will follow in the coming weeks.
