Sports participation rates continue to rise, according to latest Sport England Active People Survey

Covering the period October 2014-September 2015, the latest study revealed 15.74 million people aged 16 and over played at least 30 minutes of sport at moderate intensity at least once a week – 23,200 more people than 12 months ago and an increase of 1.65 million since the first survey in 2005-06.

When you include people aged 14-15 – the latest survey is the first to include this group – the overall figure rises to 16.62 million.

Other survey findings include:

• Age groups
3.83 million 16-25-year-olds played sport once a week, 21,600 more than 12 months ago.

11.91 people aged 26 and above played sport once a week, 1,600 more than 12 months ago.

• Gender
8.73 million males aged 16 and above played sport once a week, 21,500 fewer than during September 2013-October 2014.

7.01 million females aged 16 and above played sport once a week, 44,700 more than during September 2013-October 2014.

• Top five sports (number of adults taking part at least once a week):
1. Swimming 2.5m
2. Athletics 2.3m
3. Cycling 2m
4. Football 1.8m
5. Golf 0.74m
