Claire Carter joins OIA

Distinguished creative writer and outdoor filmmaker, Claire Carter, has joined the Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) in a newly created freelance ‘communications’ role.
It is intended that this will improve resources for members and help to boost the overall visibility and marketing activities of the Association.
Carter’s appointment coincides with CEO Andrew Denton taking on new responsibilities as Secretary General of the European Outdoor Group’s ItsGreatOutThere Coalition (IGOT).
Carter will step in to support Andrew’s OIA activities and help to represent the OIA at key outdoor events.
Working alongside Andrew Denton as well as independently, Carter will be highly visible as ‘OIA Engagement Officer’ that will see her developing and exploiting networking opportunities with other member organisations, NGB’s and NGO’s as well as representing the interests of the OIA at outdoor industry.
OIA CEO, Andrew Denton said: ”We very much welcome Claire’s addition to the OIA team and I know that she will help to support the future development of the Association by engaging and representing us at key events and with key partners. She is well known and has a reputable and respected pedigree in the outdoor market and I know that this will be a huge benefit to the Association as we continue to develop our relationships.”
Carter is well known in the industry, graduating with distinction with an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia in 2010 and is now a writer and freelance creative consultant in the outdoor industry.
Having worked previously with bodies such as The National Trust and British Mountaineering Council and with event organisers at The Kendal Mountain Festival and Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, she also moderated at the European Outdoor Summit event in Sheffield in 2015 and runs independent mountain arts and literary events.
Carter co-directed her own Award winning film in 2015, ‘Operation Moffat, a BMC film production which went on to win 21 international festival awards, was selected for the Banff and Telluride Worldwide tours, and was bought by Red Bull TV.
She is a contributor to outdoor publications, most recently a feature writer for Alpinist Magazine, and is co-editor of a new anthology of women’s adventure writing ‘Waymaking’ to be published by Vertebrate in 2018.
Carter sits on the BMC Women’s Development Group and has produced and hosted the Women In Adventure event for the last three years.
In her spare time, Carter is a committed climber and runner and enjoys ski touring when the opportunity arises.
In the last year she has had the opportunity to travel widely for festivals and film locations, and has thoroughly enjoyed running and climbing in mountain environments from Colorado to the Korean Alps.
She is looking to take up sea kayaking as a route to more remote adventures.
