Beasting it up’ or ‘Getting caked: USN reveals the language of gym jargon

Countless mince pies, extra helpings of dessert and copious amounts of mulled wine may have left many of us needing to hit the gym in January.

But with a new study showing seven out of 10 people found their first visit an intimidating one, USN, the UK’s market leading supplier of sports nutrition, has created ‘The Guide to Gym Jargon’ to make the hidden gym language one we can all easily understand.

From equipment that looks like it was built by NASA, to jargon that sounds like a foreign language for any gym newbies, research has shown over half were afraid they didn’t fit in and stood out like a sore thumb and 58 per cent were unsure how to use the equipment.

In addition, six out of 10 respondents said they found it hard to understand the terms and lingo used in the gym.

So USN has created the quirky ‘Guide to Gym Jargon,’ a handy pocket booklet that contains over 100 words and phrases with examples of how the lingo can be used every day to get people through those first few gym visits in the.

It’s a modern dictionary to help decode everyday techy gym language, which most of us don’t understand.

The guide contains popular gym words that are broken down with an additional list of alternative phrases, as well as a descriptive sentence demonstrating how they might be used in a conversation at the gym. All double dutch to most of us, but it is sure to help newbies sound like pros.

For example, when you hear someone say: “This guy is besting it up,” it relates to intensity training and anything involving intense effort, both physically and mentally. Other words for ‘beasting it up’ include ‘2 da max’, ‘extreme’ and ‘getting caked’.

Jason Oakley, managing director of USN UK, says: “For many people, visiting the gym for the first time can be a daunting experience. We compiled a survey to identify how they felt. The results were compelling. Helping our customers on their fitness journey is our priority and we believe ‘The Guide to Gym Jargon’ will make those initial visits much less intimidating.”

USN has an extensive range of sports supplements. Products include high quality and great tasting protein and meal replacement shakes, lean muscle supplements and electrolyte drinks that fall into four distinct categories: Core Series, Hardcore Series, Body Makeover Series and Pure Fit Series.
