Fresh Air Fitness, a new company that was launched at IOG Saltex, is challenging the government to do more to promote health and fitness within the community by providing free outdoor exercise facilities.
Outdoor exercise equipment, developed by sports professionals and specifically designed for permanent open air installation, is now available in the UK. According to Fresh Air Fitness, these low-cost, low-maintenance exercise parks provide the perfect gateway to a healthier, more active lifestyle.
Caroline Flint, Public Health Minister in charge of fitness, has said: “We need to ensure that sport and active recreation are accessible to all.”
Now Paul Martin, managing director of Fresh Air Fitness, believes she should turn words into action. Martin says that for as little a £15 million the government could install 1,000 fitness parks across the country in time for the 2012 Olympics and make an outdoor gym exercise facility available to millions who otherwise couldn’t afford gym membership fees.
“Not only that, but many people don’t like to exercise in a gym even if they can afford it,” says Martin. “Exercising outside in the fresh air has proven benefits towards both physical and mental well-being. One would like to think that this is an absolute no-brainer. The potential benefits over the negligible costs make this one of the best value health options open to the government.”
