Runners Need offers recycling scheme

Runners Need is offering people the chance to recycle their old trainers in any of their 34 stores nationwide.

From Sunday, October 9, and for the first month, to celebrate the launch of this campaign, people who bring in an old pair of trainers for recycling will be rewarded with £20 off** a new pair.

The campaign coincides with the retailer’s sponsorship of the Royal Parks Half Marathon in Hyde Park on the same day.

The half marathon has a sustainability angle with medals made from wood and new for this year – special bins for recycling banana skins.

After the first month, the service will remain in store as a facility that Runners Need provides to the general public, allowing them to give their old trainers a good home and hopefully save a few pairs from landfill too.

Donated trainers will be collected by the European Recycling Company.

The ERC, part of the SOEX Group, assists people all over the UK to recycle their unwanted clothes and footwear reducing the impact of shoe waste, here and around the world. Recycling trainers diverts important resources from landfill and allows them to be reused or recycled, creating employment opportunities and providing footwear to those who could not otherwise afford them.

Andy Haws, ERC CEO, said: “We are delighted to be working with Runners Need on this exciting initiative.

“Recycling your running shoes and trainers is a big step towards minimising the impact that shoe waste has on the environment, and together Runners Need and ERC are working to do just that.”
